The Palm Pre from Sprint has arrived and in this review I plan on covering the phone’s basic features and specs. Additionally, I have provided a link to a Palm Pre review video I found online earlier today. Before we begin, let’s take a look at an image of this new phone from Sprint.
Palm Pre Design
Let’s get started by looking at some of the phone’s design and hardware. Initially, the Palm Pre has a very similar look and feel as the Apple iPhone. Very sleek and industrial design made to be tough and durable. However, Palm added a qwerty keyboard that slides out of the bottom of the phone.
Palm Pre Keyboard
The keyboard gives it a one up over the iPhone and is very similar to the keyboard featured on other Palm Pilots and devices. Each key on the keyboard is lighted, so you may use it in the dark. Furthermore, the keys are spaced out very well making it easy to type on.
Palm Pre Display
The Palm Pre is equipped with a 3.1 inch touchscreen display. The display has 24-bit color support and displays at a resolution of 320 x 480. This is the same resolution as Apple’s iPhone and T-Mobile’s G1 display. The screen is quite vivid and has exceptional color clarity. Furthermore, the touch sensitivity is fluid and works much better than T-Mobile’s G1. Unfortunately, the display is qutie hard to see in the daylight and direct sunlight should probably be avoided. Overall though, the display is exceptional and better then most smartphones we see today.
Palm Pre Camera
The next feature well look at is the Palm Pre 3.2 megapixel camera. The webOS provided on the phone has a lag-free shutter and will allow you to snap many photos on the fly. Best of all, it has it’s own flash. Many other phones on the market do not have flahses, including the Apple iPhone, T-Mobile G1, and many Blackberrys. Overall, the image quality on the phone is going to be good and sufficient in most people’s everyday usage.
Palm Pre Wireless
Also, the Palm Pre from Sprint features Bluetooth 2.0 and 802.11b/g Wireless LAN capabilities. This makes the phone great for on the go wireless internet access. Something I personally need to do a lot of, and already do with my G1 from T-Mobile. The antenna like most smartphones is internal. The in-call quality should also be very good using Sprint’s 3G network. Surfing the web will also be an ease with the new webOS web browser that comes installed on the phone. Another important feature to mention is that it support GPS as well. This should allow for some cool applications to come out for this phone in the future.

And for the last part of the review is an image containing the basic specs for the Palm Pre. The specs for the phone may also be found on Palm’s or Sprint’s websites.
To conclude this review of the Palm Pre, I will say overall the phone is a great alternative to the G1 or iPhone. It is packed full of all the features you expect in today’s smartphone and more. Sprint sells the phone for $200.00 with a two year service agreement. This makes it cheaper then an iPhone and more expensive then a T-Mobile G1. Looking for an unlocked HTC Hero? Well the HTC Hero from Sprint may be available to buy fully unlocked at Best Buy states andronica. The HTC Hero is the newest Google android phone to be offered from Sprint. It has also been noted elsewhere that the Hero from HTC may be offered through Verizon Wireless sometime later this November. Since both Sprint and Verizon Wireless do not offer GSM or SIM based phones but rather CDMA phones, the HTC Hero may be a little tough to unlock on it’s own. Unlike the HTC Fuze and HTC Pure, unlocking the HTC Hero will probably require some advanced unlocking cables and software. Furthermore, you could also look to online services if you don’t want to pay a rediculous price from Best Buy for one. Apparently, they will be starting at around $599.99, but if you have particular tastes, it might be worth purchasing this phone for yourself. If we learn anything more about unlocking this new android phone, we’ll be sure to post it. Stay tuned.
